Cat's Take on the Importance of Shopping

28 Apr 2008

One of my favourite activities is shopping. I bet I share the same fascination with loads of other girls, when it comes to buying things we want. Frankly speaking, our countless retail theraphy sessions do have their perks.

1) De-stress after a hard day's or week's work - we need to reward ourselves for good jobs done right? Or maybe a little cheering up when something doesn't turn up the way we'd expected. In short, it's still cheaper than paying a professional psychiatrist. Wishing for the company (aka boss) to reward us, hmm, it only happens once every year or nothing at all.

2) Make this world a better, happier place - women gets to buy what they want, women feels contented, women gets less annoyed by the men who spent after workhours glued to the TV watching nothing but sports (duhh..), there's less likelihood of domestic argument. See? Not so bad eh. They should list shopping rebate as part of income tax requirement. After all, it promotes not only nationwide peace, but "World Peace"... hmm, to propose this to Ministry of Women, Family & Community Development.

3) Promotes healthier lifestyle - remember the time when you see that gorgeous to-die-for dress you have seen only in your dreams, being on display in a mall? How your heart beats faster and your face flushes with joy? Well, that's cardio burn-out if you ask me. And, I haven't mention those long walks circling the mall when we go form shop to shop trying to find the best item at the best bargain? 'Nough said.

4) On-spot training on purchasing, QC, finance - when we bargain we are practicing our skills at purchasing, haggling for the lowest price for the best valued items in the market. Then, we get to try out our skills at QC by selecting the item with the least glue, defect, bruise, etc form the pile. There's a chance of pressing the price lower if there's no "Grade-A" item in the pile. This requires negotiation skills. Then we must be able to calculate the discounted price from the original price to know how well we did in bargaining. After which, to know the exact change from the note we gave the vendor. If not, why waste saliva haggling for so long...??

5) Contributes to economy of 3rd world countries - how many of us can shamelessly declare that one of the joys of visiting 3rd world countries, is shopping for local items at a bargain, plus the currency exchange is a bonus. Imagine being millionnaires and being generous to the local enterprises? Be it an excuse to get souvenirs for those at home or heck-since-I-spent-a-fortune -to-get-here-might-as-well-I-buy-something-for-memory's-sake, it's not dispute that we do contribute to the local economy. Now, I might want to link this to point #2.

The list of perks go on. I'm gonna leave the rest to your imagination. I'm going to dream of shopping sessions tonight - ah, happy happy dreams that keep me at work 12 hours a day.. ;-)

Cat Goes to Bali

10 Apr - 13 Apr 2008

All girl's trip to Bali - to celebrate the upcoming weddings of my friends Shih Wei & Jie Ying. In short - hen's nite lar...

Anyway, we had a splashing good time there (though we didn't get any splash of sea water) shopping till our feet grew sore and we of course conveniently blamed it on the RM6 Balinese beaded sandals...At that price, I can bet my entire backside you won't be able to find in KL.

Gals in awe of Tanah Lot

Well, I must say that being the only one not-so-into painting shopping, I was beginning to yawn a lot when we went shop after shop full of paintings. Very fascinating indeed, still I was not moved to buy a painting for myself. Don't get me wrong, there were very nice paintings. Only problem is the "availability" of wall space in my house and I'll have to stop myself from turning my house into a masquerade of paintings purchased all over South East Asia & China.

Was looking for some decent fashion stuff I could wear but as you guessed it, typical tourist spot stuff. Loads of beachwear brands, somehow, I could get a deal in KL so... hmmm.

Me at a painting shop

This was the 2nd time I went to Bali. The one single thing that I missed the most (OK, besides the people's hospitality and warmth), is "Kacang Disco". Yea, our tour guide thought we wanted to go Disco when we asked about it.

I got 5 packs of 400gm Kacang Disko, just the right amount to stuff into my cabin size luggage along with my clothes and of course my toiletries which took up 2/3 of the total luggage weight. If they start to have restrictions on check-in luggage, that will put all the misery I can ever imagine while traveling to become reality. "Siaow meh"? Then will cause those Mak Datins and Creme de la Mer Tai-tais not being able to travel at peace (or in one smooth botox-injected piece), that leads the airlines to reap less profit from business class ticket --> not possible for the near future. Pheww.... lucky I can think of a solution to that fast!

Sad part is, the Krispy Kreme franchise closed for renovation. We managed to go for Dirty Duck - jeng, jeng, jeng. It's a restaurant known for crispy duck a la Bali, what were you thinking? ;-)

Of course, a trip to Bali wouldn't be complete without the massage and / or spa session. It's cheap and heck, we were on holiday! Time to get those joints cracking and those tense muscles relaxed. My masseuse was a plump lady(thank God for that she can really twist and press my body like mee hoon kuey), soft spoken and..can't remember much of what she said to me coz it didn't take long before I started to wander off to Dreamland. Did wake once or twice when I realized I was starting to snore (hehehe...), hopefully I did not water the nice decorative plants under the massage bed with my drool (I don't think this happened though...nah...)

Oh yea, we went to this place called "Kama Sutra" - for drinks and dance. Well, nothing 'acrobatic' observed, but I would say that we had a jolly good time there. They do have more waiters than waitresses, but since no-one offered extra services to us, maybe it's just the name. Anyway, the place serves good drink at good price (our cocktails cost around RM20 a glass, I had beer that explains why I have this tummy despite all the crunches I did). And the band was pretty good too. Well choreographed and entertaining - got us all moving to the music. Please note - partying in Bali starts at midnite.

I definitely have to end this posting with my lizard encounters. Yup, you read it right - lizard as in house cicak, those beige/brown reptile with sticky toes and breakable tails.

Encounter #1: Cicak fell on my head while I was busy selecting el-cheapo Balinese bead slippers. Expression on Shih Wei's face - priceless. I don't know how to describe it, but I would have done the same if it didn't happen to fall on MY head - coz I cannot see the cicak mah. Luckily it fell off on the slipper pile when I shook my head.

Encounter #2: There were so many cicaks at night along the corridors of the hotel. I had to walk combat style, trying to avoid a direct cicak on my head for 2nd cicak-on-head incident. Saw an enormous cicak on the roof of the hotel restaurant. I'm not exaggerating, it was a gecko sized cicak (what am I babbling about? Gecko is a cicak la...)

Encounter #3: Dead cicak discovered in the shower area of our bathroom. Fortunately, cicak's dead body only found in the morning of our departure.

Look forward to my next holiday. I'm always looking forward to vacations nowadays, I'm still having post-business-travel syndrome. Now, the office feels like a cage.... C'est la vie, mes amis
